In this literary novel we meet Gavin Matheson, who grows up in the Midwest during the 40s, 50s and 60s. His mother, Lila, is a war widow and raises Gavin to be the kind of man Gavin imagines his father was. Hopetown is both a place and a time of innocence-- or is it? Gavin sees his home through the gauzy lens of boyhood dreams, until poverty, racism, pride, betrayal, and murder shatter its image forever. But Gavin fulfills a promise and finds that honor and love lead to triumph, and hope travels with him, in his heart.

I have enjoyed her other books immensely. I was totally engrossed in this book I had a hard time putting it down. The end however was as if it was deadline time and just chopped it off without finishing. What happened between being the editor of the newspaper and the end. There is a 16 year gap. Also what happened to Everett? When did Gavin get married? What was in the package on the train? Why did the girl ignore Gavin on the train all that time and then start to talk to him? Also there were a lot of errors, for example He had come "come" instead of home. There were many other errors. Because I enjoyed Joni's other books so much and was enjoying this one so much until the end, I was extremely disappointed.Product details

Well written. A delightful story. I laughed and cried and felt the experiences. What more could you ask? Highly recommended.
Book is a good read, but be aware that the printing is sub par. The print is tiny and centered in the middle of the page leaving lots of empty space. It looks like it was printed on a home printer.
This was a very sweet book. A genuine story of a family and their struggles. Easy to relate to if you grew up in the 50's. I enjoyed it.
I had read an article "Mother Art" by Joni Hilton and was so impressed. So I was dissapointed when I felt this book didn't measure up.
Joni Hilton is amazing with the development of her characters and the plot of this story. I really felt I was on the train, being jostled around, smelling the scents of the humid summer weather, and feeling the same heat as those in the story were feeling. Joni did an excellent job with the plot and I enjoyed the surprise twist towards the end of the book. I was only going to read this book when I had time, but it was so good, I found myself reading the book straight through to the end. I could not put it down. Excellent Job by Joni Hilton.
Joni Hilton is known for her delightful humor novels. Pinholes into Heaven is a complete change from her usual fare. This is a tender, deep, well-written story. I recommend it highly. I wanted to review this book for our bookclub, but it is only available as an e-book. Several of us have s, but not all. I hope that Joni gets around to publishing this one in hard copy. If you like tender heart-felt books, then this one is for you. Or if you just like to read something that is well-written, then don't miss this one.
