The title of this book is We Do Remember You because, even though our memories of loved ones live in our hearts, those memories often need ways of expression that require DOING. With this book, the illustrator and I attempt to help you to envision some possible ways of DOING your grief through simple actions that could be called rituals. Rituals are usually thought of as formal activities that need a trained leader and public place, but I tend to think of rituals as being any thing that we do with intentionality in order to honor someone else. They can be simple or elaborate; personal or cooperative; carefully planned or virtually impromptu but they are always enacted with love and care. And I truly do believe that in these rituals of remembrance, as well as the rituals you create to remember your own loved one, our spirits touch the spirit of the one we love, but see no longer.

This book is absolutely brilliant, touching, magnificently illustrated, and it would provide an excellent tool for those who are going through, or helping others, to go through the grieve process for a young child.
A touching book that shows the perspectives of those who have lost children and the children who have gone to Heaven! It also shows some rituals (activities that anyone can do to demonstrate remembrance and show love for those who have passed), giving both ideas of some things that can be done and also demonstrating some of the activities - including for surviving children - that can get everyone involved. A great book!

In his children's book, `We Do Remember You,' Steve Butler continues the story from his first children's book, `A Letter From Heaven.' His first book told the story of Jamie, a young boy who learns to understand and grieve the death of his sister, Alexandra, who died before she was born. `We Do Remember You' is a story about how children can still celebrate and commemorate a sibling after he or she has died and gone to heaven.
`We Do Remember You,' focuses on the theme of showing children how to find a way to honor and commemorate the death of a sibling in the form of simple rituals that will allow them to stay spiritually close to them. These rituals can be, "simple, elaborate, personal, or cooperative." The story begins with a group of children gathered in Heaven's garden that includes Alexandra, Adam, Tammy, Olivia, Chandler, and John. They are remembering their parents and other family members on earth and how they are remembering them. Each child discusses how their family is remembering them through simple rituals such as lighting a candle, planting a rose bush, creating memory boxes...etc. An essential message of the book to help children understand their sibling's death is the quote from a poem "there can be no end, for eternity calls..."
`We Do Remember You,' is designed to help children to understand the death of a sibling, that includes pregnancy loss, and how children can still honor and keep the memory of their sibling alive through simple rituals. The personal rituals are a way for them to continue communicating with them although they are physically separated. The book is wonderfully well-written and illustrated and deals with an issue that can be very painful to a child. I appreciate the gentleness in how the story is told and how the story helps children learn that although there is a physical loss, they still have ways to maintain closeness with their sibling. Through a well-written narrative and beautiful illustrations, the messages will be easily understood. At the end of the book there is a list of resources for further assistance in helping a child grieve and understand the loss.
`We Do Remember You' is a very uplifting story and is highly recommended for every child dealing with the loss of a sister or brother. Parents can read the story with their children and together discuss the messages of the story and what they can do as a family to honor their memory.

Written by Steve butler and illustrated by Grace Mayfield, this book aims to help families grieving the death of an infant or child. Not only does it provide a picture book for families to read to surviving children filled with questions, it also offers ideas for tangible ways to act out their grief.
A group of children gather in Heaven. Some of the children died as babies and some as older children. One doesn't remember being born; she never met her family and never received a name. The story follows their discussion. One by one they share how their families on Earth remember them. Here are some of the ideas shared
* Regular visits to the cemetery, sometimes bringing flowers or singing lulabies
* Planting and tending a special tree or rose bush
* Inviting friends for a remembrance dinner and prayer time
* Working at a children's camp, creating crafts that the deceased child would like
* Donating items to the church nursery or children's ministries
* Writing poetry
The author provides a number of wonderful additional resources at the back of the book. These include a large number of websites that offer additional books and/or support groups for families who have lost children in various stages of life or pregnancy. He has also quoted poems and prayers of encouragement and remembrance
WHAT I LIKE The tone is warm, loving and gentle. It's a comforting story that is sure to help those in the tides of grief. I like the ideas presented. I think it is important for families, especially children who have lost siblings, to feel free to express their grief in tangible ways. This book is a wonderful catalyst toward that end. I especially like all the resources and poems at the back of the book. They're absolutely beautiful!
WHAT I DISLIKE The illustrations do not look professional. Some parts offer great detail and technique, but other parts seem distorted and disproportional. Their inconsistencies and lack of quality greatly distract from the overall appeal of the book.
OVERALL RATING Very Good.
